Voter education is more critical than ever. It empowers you to make informed decisions. All voices need to be heard in this election to drive change and ensure your voice is counted. The Council on American-Islamic Relations has excellent resources. Remember, you must be an American citizen to register to vote.
Who is Eligible to be a Voter
Only citizens can vote. It is a felony to register to vote if you are not a citizen. A non-citizen who votes puts their future citizenship in jeopardy and risks jail or deportation. Sometimes, people fill out many forms, get a driver’s license, or go to DSHS and are accidentally registered to vote. It happens often. There is a form to cancel the registration, and free or low-cost attorneys at Manzanita House and Latinos en Spokane can help.
To register to vote in the state of Washington, you must meet all requirements:
A United States citizen.
A Washington state resident.
At least 18 years old. If you are at least 16, you can sign up as a Future Voter.
Not disqualified from voting due to a court order.
Not currently serving a sentence of total confinement in prison under the jurisdiction of the Department of Corrections for a Washington felony conviction.
Not currently incarcerated for a federal or out-of-state felony conviction.
If eligible, it's easy and secure to register! Check your info at VoteWA.gov.
If you were convicted of a felony in Washington, another state, or in federal court, your right to vote will be restored immediately upon release from prison. You must register again to receive a ballot.
